Democracy is (partly) awakened in Chesham & Amersham

In May we won control of Amersham Town Council, doubled councillors on Chesham Town Council and took our first Unitary seat in Chiltern Ridges.

In June, we won the parliamentary by-election, with Sarah Green becoming the first ever Liberal Democrat MP in Buckinghamshire.

As Chairman of the Chesham & Amersham Liberal Democrats, I am extremely proud of these election successes, but our achievements go well beyond having an MP and many more councillors.

My proudest achievement is that our campaigns (both council & parliamentary by-election) made the voters relevant again. Our campaigns made it possible for people to believe that the complacent Tories could be beaten.

We said that, just as in business a monopoly is bad for the consumer, in politics it is bad for services and policies. The biggest congratulations go to the residents of the Chesham & Amersham Constituency who will now without a doubt receive improved services and better representation.

I say democracy is partly awakened because until we have proportional representation, we do not really have genuine representation and full democracy. The first past the post system robs the majority of voters of their votes and discourages many people from voting because they think their vote will not count. It is why we still ended up in Buckinghamshire with 15 seats to the Tories' huge 113 seats

For council elections, England is the only nation in the UK that does not have PR and it really is time we did. So as happy as we are, we know we have much work to do.

Until then, the demographic changes taking place, a strong membership and executive team and putting the voters first will ensure that we can hold our parliamentary seat and win many more council seats .
